Recent reports of computer virus attacks have reached
the news once again, so it's time to review how they work and
what to do in an emergency.
How do Viruses
spread? By now everyone has heard of
computer viruses and the potential threat they represent to
your business. Not only will they cause you lost productivity,
but a major cleanup effort will cost you money as well. The
two most recent attacks have targeted Microsoft Outlook users
by attaching malicious programs to the email messages
themselves. Receiving such a message is normally not
the problem, but opening the attachment is where it
gets you! This is because the act of opening the attachment
switches your computer's mode of operation from an essentially
passive one (i.e. displaying email message) to an active one
(i.e. executing programming code). Computer virus authors
realize this and attempt to dupe you into opening the
attachment which then gives their virus authorization to do
its damage.

| Do NOT open
unsolicited email attachments! |
| What do I do if
attacked? Step #1: Do NOT open unsolicited
email attachments! Step #2: If the virus has been
activated, turn off your computer immediately! Do not
bother with "Shut Down" as time is of the essence to stop the
damage. Step #3: Ask around for recovery advice. Step
#4: Upgrade your Virus protection
ASAP!
